Autumn Tour 2018
The Netherlands is the world premiere performance of Two Tonne Theatre, from Artistic Director Iain Bloomfield. Having supported thousands of emerging and established artists during his tenure at Theatre in the Mill, Bradford, The Netherlands launches the company with a Yorkshire tour of a bold production about being the parent of a child with learning disabilities.
Imagine wanting all your life to visit Italy, the country of your dreams. Imagine boarding your plane – you’ve saved for months, bought new clothes, read all the guide books – only to be told on touchdown that you’re in The Netherlands…
The Netherlands is a play about ending up where you least expected, not through travel, but in becoming a parent of a child with a learning disability. In an often-unhelpful, uncompromising world, it’s about finding out that the place you never dreamed of going, is a beautiful, fascinating country. First created ten years ago, The Netherlands has been reworked and updated by both Iain Bloomfield and original collaborator Lucy Hind, after extensive conversations with parents across the North of England.
Performed by two actors, this play will speak to everyone who has known the magnificent, terrifying, joyful, heart-breaking chaos that is becoming a parent.
The company have worked in partnership with a number of venues and organisations to reflect the experiences of parents, from those with newborn children to those of adults with disabilities, as Director Iain Bloomfield is himself now. Iain explains;
“Our first production as Two Tonne puts the emotional and mental wellbeing of parents center stage. It navigates its way through the tumultuous and exhausting experiences of both a father and a mother and highlights the imbalance that can be found when it comes to accessing the right kind of support, because of class or background.”
Sharing ideas and conversations around the topics raised in each production is something Two Tonne are committed to. The conversations with parents and professionals working in health care and education will continue throughout the tour, as a post-show discussion will be held after each of the performances. This is an opportunity for everyone’s voice and opinions to be heard, with the hope of creating a space to help parents feel both empowered and valued.
‘The Netherlands’ is supported by Arts Council England, Mind the Gap, Interplay Theatre and Cast Doncaster.
Opening at Mind The Gap in Bradford on 26th and 27th October 2018 and then touring to Theatre Deli, Sheffield on 7th November and Interplay in Armley, Leeds on 14th November. The Netherlands will then tour the UK in Spring 2019.
